PERFORMANCE
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

First things first: When you drive a hybrid, you want to know it has the power and the range to take you where you want to go, when you want to go, without hesitation. These models deliver. Still, only with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV can you go totally green and rely on pure electric power for short jaunts and easy commutes.

Power Players

The Outlander PHEV’s gas engine and twin electric motors generate 248 combined net horsepower, outperforming the CR-V Hybrid’s system with its 204 total system horsepower. This discrepancy is also noticeable in their capabilities: The Mitsubishi can tow up to 1,500 pounds, while the Honda taps out at 1,000 pounds.

When it comes to performance features, the Outlander PHEV draws on Mitsubishi’s motorsports heritage to offer optimal control over driving and braking thanks to Super All-Wheel Control. It also offers seven drive modes for efficiency and to provide control in nearly any type of road or weather condition. The Honda CR-V Hybrid offers just four drive modes.

Range/Mileage

One of many reasons to drive a hybrid is for its fuel economy. Thanks to the Mitsubishi’s EV Mode Selector Switch, the Outlander PHEV operates at maximum efficiency and yields:

  • 64 combined MPGe
  • 420 miles of total range
  • 38 miles of all-electric range for zero-emission travel

On the other hand, the CR-V Hybrid with available all-wheel drive (that comes standard in the Outlander PHEV) gets just 37 combined MPG. And, as noted earlier, it offers no electric-only option.

Charging the Outlander PHEV is easy too. Charge it to 100% overnight at home and your Mitsubishi will be ready for any travels the next morning. When you’re on the go, you can power up from 0 to 80% in 38 minutes at a DC fast charger in the ever-expanding national network. Its regenerative braking system will also convert and store energy to keep you moving.

DESIGN
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

When you drive an SUV, it’s common to have other people join you for the ride, so you’ll want to ensure everyone on board is comfortable. And, of course, you’ll want to choose a model that offers all those must-have features that match your style: your personal style, your lifestyle, and your driving style. As you’ll see, several design aspects magnify the differences between these two hybrids.

Trim Levels

Having multiple trim levels to choose from allows you to select the configuration that provides everything you need—and, just as importantly, everything you want. That may be easier with the Outlander PHEV since this Mitsubishi has six dedicated PHEV trim levels, twice as many as the Honda CR-V’s three hybrid trims.

Although the CR-V’s hybrid trim levels all have the name “Sport” in them, they lack the motorsports styling of the Mitsubishi RALLIART that features:

  • RALLIART graphics
  • WHite Diamond finish with black roof
  • Power panoramic sunroof
  • Exclusive accessories

To fully channel your inner race car driver and turn a few heads in the process, the Outlander PHEV truly goes the extra mile.

Accommodating Interior

The 3-row configuration of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV provides ample room for up to 7 riders. Meanwhile, as with most SUVs, the Honda’s layout seats five in two rows; so, if you have a large crew, you’ll need to take an additional vehicle or risk having to leave someone behind.

So, how comfortable will those passengers be? The headroom in their respective first two rows tell the tale:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (1st/2nd-Row Headroom): 40.6/39.1 inches
  • Honda CR-V Hybrid (1st/2nd-Row Headroom): 38.2/38.2 inches

Beyond its additional space, the Mitsubishi ensures your and your copilot’s comfort with available front massage seats, a feature not found in the Honda.

DISTINCTIONS
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Both current-year models have received awards, although one hybrid has been more highly recognized than the other. And one manufacturer stands behind its hybrid with extended warranties. In both cases, they’re one and the same: the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Accolades

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit organization that tests and evaluates vehicles based on their ability to protect occupants in a collision as well as on equipping technology that can help prevent or lessen the severity of a collision. Both the Outlander PHEV and the Honda CR-V Hybrid have been designated a 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK by the IIHS.

Still, the Mitsubishi flagship PHEV SUV is the winner of the 2024 MotorWeek Drivers' Choice Award for Best Small Utility. Also, for the second year in a row, it took top honors as Green Car Journal's Family Green Car of the Year™. As a result, it comes as no surprise that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV.*

Warranties

When you purchase a model, you expect it to perform well for many years and miles to come. Still, it’s reassuring when a manufacturer stands steadfastly behind its vehicle. Although Mitsubishi and Honda provide similar types of warranties for these hybrid models, the Outlander PHEV’s is superior in every respect:

Warranty
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Honda CR-V Hybrid
New Vehicle Limited Warranty 5 years/60K miles 3 years/36K miles
Powertrain Limited Warranty 10 years/100K miles 5 years/60K miles
Anti-Corrosion/Perforation Limited Warranty 7 years/100K miles 5 years
Main Drive Battery 10 years/100K miles 8 years/100K miles
PHEV Components 10 years/100K miles N/A

Both models provide Roadside Assistance, although the Outlander PHEV leads the charge once again, providing it for 5 years/unlimited miles vs. the CR-V Hybrid’s 3 years/36K miles. So, you’ll have additional peace of mind when you require any of the following:

  • Emergency fuel delivery
  • Jump-start
  • Flat tire exchange
  • Lock-out assistance
  • Minor repairs
  • Towing services

Mitsubishi also includes additional assistance in the form of Travel Interruption Insurance and Concierge Services. With the Outlander PHEV, coverage equals confidence.
